Caveats and Otherwise
- Local Quicktime files - For security reasons, local QuickTime files cannot be played through an embedded QuickTime control on a web page. For the time being the file types are limited to Windows Media (wmv) and any other format that Windows Media can play. (MPG, AVI, WAV, WMA, MP3, others).
- Firefox and local files - For other security reasons, Firefox does not allow javascript handling of local file paths. Therefore selecting a local file in Firefox using the browse button does not work. However, you can type the local url for the video into the local url field.
- Remote Videos - If you have the URL for a remote streaming video or audio file, click the "Open an online video or audio file" link and then type in a remote url. Hint: To grab a remote url, you can often check the properties of the video. You will generally find the video url and can copy and paste it into the online video url field. This works in both Windows Media and Quicktime.
Tagging
- The best way to get started is to place a tag at the very beginning of the video. Click on "Add a tag" and type a tag tile ("Start" is always nice.) If you'd rather place your first tag farther into the video, just click the play button and click "Add a tag" when you get to the point where you want to place a tag.
- When you click "Add a Tag"

The time value in the "Tag Time" field changes to the exact time you clicked the Add a Tag button. That is the start time for the current tag.
- Next simply add the text that will appear as the tag on the tag menu. You may also add some description text which you may use a a note to yourself. This field becomes searchable when the program is published online.
- You may also create chapters to contain and organize the tags. Simply click the "Add a Chapter" button. Chapters can be nested in other chapters.
- Note that when you click either "Add a Chapter" or "Add a Tag" the current chapter will be the default for the placement of the new chapter or tag.
- The video stops playing when either "Add a Chapter" or "Add a Tag" is pressed. You will often want to re-start the player in order to determine the exact contents of the video from that point forward. At any time you have the option to either start the video from the current tag time or re-setting the start time of the currently edited tag by pressing "Set tag time to current time".
- One of the most useful features of the tag edit menu is a little utility called The Skipper.

Often you don't realize where the new tag should start until a few seconds after that point is reached. In that case, simply go ahead and press "Add a Tag". Then press and hold the skipper back button until you feel you've gone before the point where the tag should be. When you release the skipper button, the tag time will be reset to the new current time, however, this is unlikely to be the exact time you want the tag to occur. The video will start playing once the skip value is reached so just watch the video and then this time, when you see the exact place you want the tag time, click "Set Tag Time to Current Time" and you have quickly and easily set the tag time you wanted. Click "Save Tag" Note: The end time of any tag is the start time of the following tag.
- Your local programs will be automatically saved in a local cookie for access later. You may also export the program using the "Save to file" button. In the future if you are interested in publishing that program you can import that file into your Raptive Media account and begin publishing immediately (pending online publication of the video itself).
- To go back to the program/video selection screen, press the "New" button.
